Moving from Cultural Competence to Cultural Empathy.
- Cultural empathy is the learned ability of counselors to understand accurately the self-experiences of clients from other cultures. Cultural humility involves understanding the complexity of identities — that even in sameness there is difference — and that a clinician will never be fully competent about the evolving and dynamic nature of a patient's experiences. Cultural competence points to an endpoint in understanding a person’s culture but through the lens of cultural humility clinicians will be able to see there is not endpoint but continued learning.
